LET’S GET BEEFY!

“Eat More Protein!” Are you tired of hearing that message yet? It’s an important part of your nutritional health, regardless of what some unsubstantiated headlines have been spouting lately. Protein is one of the body’s truly essential macronutrients for many reasons including muscle development and retention, and hormonal health.

Animal proteins, beef specifically, are one of the best sources for your health because they do contain the full spectrum of amino acids that your body uses as the building blocks for the hormones that regulate many biological processes. It is also more bioavailable than the proteins in plants and plant based meat alternatives. Click here to read an article that dives into that topic!

This week let’s look at beef from a protein standpoint. Are all cuts of beef created equally when it comes to your nutrition? This chart I’ve prepared looks at over ten common forms of beef and compares the protein, fat and caloric content when comparing 100g of raw beef.

What you can see here is that some cuts contain protein in higher concentrations while others contain significantly higher proportions of fat. Now fat is not our enemy but from a nutritional perspective if you are looking to optimize the “bang for your buck” when it comes to prioritizing protein in your caloric “budget” some of these options may out weigh others, no pun intended.

Knowing more about the foods you are choosing so that your choices are informed is an important part of achieving optimal health. We hope this little look at beef was informative. More deep dives will be coming!

I can tell you though that Japanese A5 Wagyu may be one of the world’s most delicious cuts of beef, 100g will give ya 460 calories, 46g of fat and a little over 11g of protein, for around $100! It might not be the best item for the top of a shopping list!
